The Secret Path (1999)

Plot

Fourteen-year-old Jo Ann Foley endures a harsh life in a destitute Southern town amid World War II. Abused by her grandfather Hank, who is involved in bootlegging, she is trapped in a cycle of exploitation, much like her mother, Marie. Jo Ann occasionally finds solace with a humble yet dignified African American couple, Honey and Too Tall, who offer her the love and support she desperately craves. Their bond provides a glimmer of hope in her otherwise bleak existence, showcasing the power of human connection against a backdrop of adversity.
