A voice narrates a project exploring the four pivotal stages of love: initial encounters, physical desire, conflicts and separations, and reconciliation. This narrative unfolds through the experiences of three couples at different life stages: young, middle-aged, and elderly. The nature of the project remains a mystery—whether it’s a play, film, novel, or opera. Accompanying the project’s creator is a peculiar assistant. Meanwhile, two years earlier, an American civil servant engages with an elderly French couple, former Resistance fighters from World War II, negotiating with a Hollywood director for the rights to share their story. The couple's family debates intense issues surrounding nationality, memory, and history.
