Plot

Set against the backdrop of 1970s Iran, young Marjane 'Marji' Satrapi experiences the excitement and hope of her family as they celebrate the fall of the despised Shah during the Iranian Revolution of 1979. As she matures, however, Marji begins to see the harsh reality of life under a new regime led by Islamic fundamentalists, revealing a society that has transformed into a stifling dictatorship. Her journey reflects the disillusionment of growing up in a country where freedom is increasingly curtailed.
