Episode Overview
The mountain climbers deceive Derek about the axe embedded in their friend's head, claiming it was an accident. During surgery, he and George uncover that it was intentionally placed there, with one climber confessing he wanted to "end his suffering." Meanwhile, Richard discovers Adele unconscious in the bathroom and manages to stabilize her, but she later has a miscarriage. He finds out that Adele was pregnant with his son, not from a brief fling. Bailey feels let down by Callie being named the new Chief Resident and doubts her surgical skills. Richard decides to appoint Derek as Chief of Surgery, but Derek declines, insisting he’s not finished with his current role. As Cristina and Burke's wedding approaches, Cristina struggles to focus on anything other than work. This anxiety leads Burke to realize he doesn't truly love her and he walks away. Meanwhile, Meredith and Derek face uncertainty in their relationship; despite Derek declaring her the love of his life, they ultimately decide to end things.
