The carnival has arrived, bringing with it a mix of joy and dread when a sideshow performer is found dead. Phryne takes on the role of magician’s assistant, Fern, to dig deeper into the mystery. The carnival's vibrant atmosphere stirs bittersweet memories of her childhood with her sister, Janey, who vanished one fateful night at the big top. Her investigation takes a dark turn as she uncovers that Murdoch Foyle, the man suspected of her sister's murder, orchestrated a grand prison break. However, hope for closure fades when she discovers that Foyle has already died and been cremated.
