Patti is upset that no one showed up for her party. Meanwhile, Hallam is outside defrosting his car while arguing with Sandra, and Pearce arrives to catch a ride to the station. He becomes frustrated as firemen approach one by one to apologize for missing the event, each offering weak excuses. Kevin attends his father's funeral, and Blue Watch is dispatched to rescue a worker trapped under a heavy block. Billy, who knows the man from school, tries to offer encouragement, but the man ultimately dies, leaving Billy in shock as the more experienced firefighters help him cope with the harsh reality of their job. Sandra runs into Patti at a self-service restaurant and informs her that Hallam might consider a civilian role. Kevin returns a racing dog to its former owner.
