Dead Lucky (2018)
S09E05 The Real Thing
Episode Overview
Jo's budding romance with her fencing coach, the accomplished athlete and journalist Guy Merrin, is catching the attention of her friends. However, things take a dark turn when 17-year-old athlete Callum Stiles collapses and dies during a race. Jo discovers syringes in his bag, prompting his mother to reveal that Callum was under immense pressure to succeed but insists she wouldn’t have allowed him to use drugs, as she had her own experience with a sporting scandal. Meanwhile, Jonesy suspects the presence of EPO, a drug that enhances oxygen flow and evades standard testing. Guy arrives at the station seeking details after hearing whispers about drug involvement. Tom and PJ worry that Jo's personal life might cloud her judgment, but she can't shake her curiosity about the allegations. Both Assistant Coach Dan Reed and runner Fiona Bartram defend Callum, with Dan being a vocal opponent of drug use, while Callum's elite coach Frank Jarvis has also spoken out against doping.
