Caen stood as one of the most significant hurdles for the Allied forces pushing inland after the Normandy landings on June 6, 1944, making it a crucial target for the 3rd British Division on Sword Beach. On D-Day, the Allies couldn't seize the vital city due to fierce counterattacks from the 21st Panzer Division. Subsequent assaults by the 3rd Canadian Division on June 7-8 were thwarted by the 12th SS Panzer Division 'Hitlerjugend', and attempts by the 7th British Armoured Division from June 11-14 also failed. Operation 'Epsom' commenced on June 25, following attacks from RAF Bomber Command, but British and Canadian efforts on July 4 halted before fully capturing the city.
