S06E01 The Battle for the Crimea
Episode Overview
Hitler's fixation on Crimea led to intense conflicts with his generals, who he believed lacked an understanding of wartime economics. In October 1941, the German 11th Army, commanded by Manstein, managed to break through Soviet defenses, marking the start of a series of brutal confrontations that resulted in the loss of two entire Russian armies. Manstein's successful siege of Sevastopol earned him a promotion to Field Marshal. However, the situation shifted dramatically following the catastrophic German defeats at Stalingrad and Kursk. Isolated in Crimea, the Germans faced overwhelming Russian assaults, and Sevastopol fell in May 1944, against Hitler's commands, leading to the annihilation of twelve German and Romanian divisions and the capture of 25,000 troops.
