Battlefield (1994)
S06E02 Scandinavia: The Forgotten Front
Episode Overview
After a brutal 14-week conflict, the war between Finland and Russia came to a close in March 1940, with Finland ultimately conceding significant territory to the Soviet forces. Approximately 500,000 people were evacuated from the Karelian isthmus, where the fiercest battles took place. Despite the loss, it was a bittersweet victory for the Soviets, as they suffered heavy casualties, with nearly a million Russians perishing and the flaws of the Red Army laid bare. This prompted Hitler to move forward with plans to invade his former ally. Concurrently, he recognized Norway as a potential threat and executed the first airborne invasion there in February 1940, while German troops also invaded Denmark. Over the following years, the brutalities and political machinations of the Quisling regime in Norway emerged, met with staunch Norwegian resistance.
