Episode Overview
The Okinawa campaign, intended as the crucial launch point for the Allied invasion of Japan, resulted in the highest number of American fatalities in the Pacific theater. The Japanese had built extensive defenses and were determined to defend every part of the island. A significant moment was the 700-plane Kamikaze attack on the US naval fleet. American losses were projected at around 49,000. Ultimately, US troops secured the island by June 1945, and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August marked a dramatic conclusion to the war with Japan.
