In August 1943, pressured by relentless Allied bombings, Romania switched allegiance. This shift led to rapid developments: the Russians swiftly took control of the crucial Ploesti oil fields, significantly impacting the German military campaign, and within days, they captured Bucharest. Meanwhile, a worried Bulgaria sought peace with the Allies, but the Russians continued their advance into Sofia. Despite German efforts to stall, Hungary soon fell as well. In Yugoslavia, the Germans stubbornly clung to Belgrade until October, while the Soviets were left to handle the bloody aftermath, which continued until the war’s conclusion.
