The Defiant Ones (2017)
S01E03 Part 3
Episode Overview
In 1989, Jimmy leveraged his production skills to help establish Interscope Records, focusing on cutting-edge artists such as Trent Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Gwen Stefani, and No Doubt. He also partnered with Dr. Dre, whose solo album The Chronic had been produced under Death Row Records, a label he co-founded with Suge Knight, the D.O.C., and Dick Griffey. Impressed by Dre’s unique artistry, Jimmy negotiated a distribution deal with Death Row. The Chronic achieved massive success, leading to Snoop Dogg's breakout. However, as public backlash against rap intensified, Interscope and Time Warner faced growing scrutiny. Despite pressures to divest from Death Row, Dre, Snoop, and new artist Tupac Shakur found themselves in a heated rivalry with East Coast rap figures like Sean "Puffy" Combs, prompting Dre to consider a fresh start.
