Edwardian Farm (2010)
S01E04 December
Episode Overview
Archaeologists Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn, along with historian Ruth Goodman, are at Morwellham Quay in Devon, a once-thriving port in Britain. Their goal is to revive the area to reflect its bustling Edwardian past. In the midst of December's chill, the trio confronts the daunting task of making a living during one of the toughest months. They must leverage their livestock, seek out part-time jobs, and venture to the coast for fishing opportunities. With widespread poverty affecting rural communities, many Edwardian farmers sought additional work. Following the tradition of Tamar Valley farmers, Alex and Peter aim to benefit from the proximity to both Devon coasts and the fishing industry. Meanwhile, Ruth explores the increasing roles of Edwardian women in domestic service, visiting the elegant Lanhydrock House, where she discovers modern comforts like running water and electric lights. However, when fishing proves unsuccessful for Alex and Peter, Ruth steps in to create a humble Christmas lunch for them all.
