Nancy MacDonald, the director of a space agency, receives a surprising transmission from astronaut Christopher Lindy, who vanished during a standard space mission two decades earlier. Once romantically involved with Lindy, she grapples with the reality of time's passage while he struggles to survive alone on an unfamiliar planet. To aid him against a hostile alien creature, MacDonald seeks assistance from her husband, marine biologist Greg Tilman. Meanwhile, she and her team race against the clock to devise a plan that could rescue Lindy before the chance slips away once more.
