Episode Overview
Luis Aguilar, a wealthy wine merchant, cuts ties with his son after he declines to marry the stunning vineyard proprietor, Kitty Norris. During a party, Luis offers his broke son $5,000 if he can outdrink him. However, Luis manages to embarrass his son by outdrinking him with his own wine, "Joyful Woman." Following the contest, Luis makes advances toward Kitty, but she rebuffs him and shoves him down the stairs. Witnessing this, Luis's secretary Ruth, consumed by jealousy, kills him, hoping to frame Kitty. When a waiter uncovers the truth about Luis's death, Ruth knocks him out and hides his body in a wine vat, slowly filling it with water. The police discover Luis’s remains and begin searching for the waiter, who happens to be the son of investigator George Felse. Unable to find the waiter, they instead find a guilt-ridden Ruth, who has attempted suicide.
