On July 19, 1989, United Airlines Flight 232 suffers a catastrophic failure when its rear-mounted number two engine detonates, severely crippling the hydraulic systems and rendering the flight controls inoperable. The courageous pilots skillfully manipulate the thrust from the remaining engines to execute an emergency landing at Sioux Gateway Airport in Iowa, ultimately saving 185 of the 296 passengers and crew aboard. An investigation later revealed that the engine malfunction stemmed from a fatigue crack in the front fan disk, a flaw originating from defects present in the titanium ingot used during its initial production.
