On July 16, 1999, John F. Kennedy Jr. tragically loses his life when the Piper Saratoga aircraft he is flying plunges into the Atlantic Ocean near Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, amid foggy weather. His wife, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, and her sister, Lauren Bessette, are also on board and perish in the incident. An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board determined that the crash resulted from spatial disorientation leading to pilot error.
