Fran begins dating the new cantor at the temple, Gary. After Mr. Sheffield hears him perform, he casts Gary in his upcoming play. When the original lead is tragically hit by a bus, Gary is elevated to the starring role and chooses to leave the temple to pursue his Broadway dreams. This decision leads to Sylvia and Fran facing backlash from the congregation, who shun them. In a moment of frustration, Sylvia casts a curse on Fran, causing chaos in her life until she donates $500 from an airline company to the temple, attempting to mend the rift.
