Dan receives a visit from his longtime friend, Major Jason Leeds, who presents Johnny with an invitation to attend West Point. Despite the prestigious offer, Johnny has never thought about pursuing a military path and asks Dan to advise him to decline. Torn, Dan refuses to make the choice for Johnny, clearly worried about his future yet recognizing the incredible chance this represents. As Johnny grapples with the tough decision, he finds clarity after heroically saving the major's life, which influences his thoughts on the opportunity ahead.
