Episode Overview
By September 1862, the South seems poised for victory. President Lincoln is eager to free all slaves but understands he must secure a military win first. Frustrated with his current leader, he sends George Hazard to gauge Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's interest in commanding the Northern troops. After a disgruntled ex-overseer shoots a runaway slave from Mont Royal, the family decides to help any slaves who want to escape. Shortly after, Ashton arrives and is taken aback to see Brett and Madeline toiling in the fields. She reveals to Madeline that she knows her secret and will expose it unless she leaves. Meanwhile, Virgilia works at a Union field hospital, where the head nurse, Mrs. Neal, insists on equal treatment for all soldiers. Charles and Billy find themselves face-to-face on the battlefield.
