Episode Overview

King James of Scotland makes his way south to claim the throne, having been invited by Robert Cecil. Concurrently, John Gerard, a Catholic priest devoted to dismantling the Protestant regime established during Elizabeth's reign, has managed to escape and connect with a radical faction within the Catholic underground. This group includes the extremist Guy Fawkes, who has devised a scheme to blow up Parliament while the King is present. While Cecil learns of the gunpowder plot, he struggles to determine the timing and details of the attack. His investigation is further complicated by King James's grand ambitions to unite Scotland and England into a new kingdom of Great Britain.
