S04E01 Earls Court and Alperton
Episode Overview
Tim and Siddy delve into Earl’s Court station, a bustling hub on the Piccadilly and District lines known for its history of innovation. It was the first station to feature a passenger escalator and automatic lifts. Tim learns about the station's current renovations, including redesigned walkways that complement its iconic glass roof. Meanwhile, Siddy heads to Alperton, located at the western end of the Piccadilly Line. This station, a prime example of Charles Holden's work, was considered cutting-edge when it was constructed in the 1930s. Back at the Museum depot in Acton, a passionate volunteer shares with Tim the restored mechanics of a 1930s platform indicator that utilized a telegraph system to inform passengers of their train's destination.
