Episode Overview
Eighteen-year-old Max is now in his third year of what was supposed to be a one- to two-year traineeship. After being overlooked for a permanent position last year when a fellow trainee advanced after just one year, he finds himself in a critical season with a new trainee joining the ranks. His rival, Jake Nolan, is not only competing for the same spot but is also one of Max's closest friends, with whom he surfs, trains, and hangs out. When Head Lifeguard Hoppo lays down the rule that only one will remain at the end of the year, their friendship takes a competitive turn, igniting the race between them. Max kicks things off by rescuing an uncle and his daughter from Mauritius, while Jake counters with a rescue on the southern end of the beach.
