Every four to six years, an enormous swell hits Sydney's coastline, becoming part of local legends. On January 20th, an intense low-pressure system between New Zealand and Tasmania sent colossal waves crashing onto Bondi and nearby beaches. Lifeguards sprang into action, directing swimmers to the safest spots, but the towering waves—reaching up to 15 feet—forced them to close the beach for the first time in 12 years. Despite sweltering temperatures of 33 degrees, many swimmers ignored the lifeguards’ warnings, leading to several rescues. One man, Mohommed, was found struggling in the impact zone and gratefully thanked the lifeguards as they brought him to safety. Others were trapped beneath the waves, requiring multiple attempts for rescue. Meanwhile, lifeguard Azza Graham seized the chance to surf the massive swells, showcasing that big waves can also be thrilling for lifeguards.
