This Old House (1979)
S15E23 The Honolulu House - 5
Episode Overview
The episode opens at the stunning Royal Hawaiian Hotel, affectionately known as the Pink Palace, which has graced Waikiki since 1927 as one of its first luxury hotels. Our master carpenter discusses how the new siding will mimic the original's board and batten design, before checking in with job superintendent Rob Varner about the lanai's reinforcements using a welded steel frame. Inside, the kitchen wall is removed to provide Christiane with the ocean view she’s been dreaming of. We then take a look at Lolani Place, the historic residence of Hawaii's last monarchs and the only royal palace in the U.S., showcasing its impressive restoration. Back at the construction site, “invisible” audio speakers are installed in the ceiling, and project architect Dan Moran presents recessed halogen lights for the “art wall,” prairie-style exterior fixtures, and brass entry hardware that comes with a lifetime tarnish-free warranty.
