This Old House (1979)
S17E18 The Salem House - 18
Episode Overview
After a snowstorm, we arrive to discover the front hall floor has been beautifully treated with a faux marble finish by decorative painter Julie Clay. In the kitchen, Tom Worthen is busy installing a "man-made slate" countertop, a robust composite made from Portland cement and a mica-like mineral, ideal for home use despite its laboratory origins. Upstairs, Michael Griffiths lays down a plush carpet crafted from recycled soda bottles. Meanwhile, in the McIntire room, historical goods merchant John Burrows oversees the placement of a historically accurate carpet, which was woven on a traditional narrow loom in England, unchanged since 1790. We check out the new alarm system featuring a low-temperature sensor, and Josh Feinstein showcases the updated lighting. The team also explores a pop-up ventilator for the modular cooktop, while we admire period-reproduction furnishings in the living room and guest bedroom, where we meet the latest addition to the project.
