This Old House (1979)
S18E14 The Nantucket House - 14
Episode Overview
After a trip to the scenic Coatue beach reservation with Jim Lentowski, the director of the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, we explore both the stunning landscape and a 1920s fishing shack used by the foundation's rangers, evoking a simpler era on the island. Upon returning to the house, our master carpenter discusses clapboarding preferences with Bruce Killen, focusing on the "Nantucket style" of 3" exposure, sunken nails, and no back-caulking, and Bruce shares local examples. Outside, foreman Mike Lynch presents a new deck system made of durable ipe, or Brazilian black walnut. Our host then visits the Nashaquisset community, known for its traditional Nantucket charm. Back at the house, designer Jock Gifford unveils a Victorian fence design inspired by historical elements from Main Street.
