This Old House (1979)
S18E15 The Nantucket House - 15
Episode Overview
At the Nantucket Marine Lab, we meet director Rob Garrison, who shares insights into their initiatives to boost the island's scallop population. Back at the house, Bruce Killen informs us that the Historic District Commission deemed the proposed Victorian fence “too extravagant,” opting instead for a simple Quaker picket design. Painters Gerry Ratnecht and George Loranger meticulously fill nail holes, sand the surfaces, and apply a high-quality latex paint, a departure from the oil finishes traditionally used on the island. Inside, Bruce observes carpenter Joe Topham adding traditional Victorian trim to a new window. We also meet landscaper Michael Flanagan, who is skillfully dry-laying Pennsylvania fieldstone walls, before plasterer Howie Nair explains the process of repairing the damaged plaster cornice moldings in the front room. Lastly, energy-conservation expert David Weitz conducts a blower-door test on the building, working to ensure it meets the utility company's stringent energy standards.
