This Old House (1979)
S19E20 The San Francisco House - 1
Episode Overview
The This Old House team heads to San Francisco for an exciting challenge: transforming a 1906 church, which has recently served as a synagogue, into a home for store designer Mark Dvorak and his fiancée, Laurie Ann Bishop. Upon exploring the building, they find vast spaces that feel institutional, outdated systems, yet stunning views of the Bay. The couple showcases their current apartment, filled with bold decor, which they intend to contrast with a minimalist aesthetic in their new home. Architect Barbara Chambers, who resides in her own minimalist creation, guides them through a model of the renovation, which includes a two-car garage in the basement, a preserved chapel area, and a two-story addition for a kitchen, bathroom, and three bedrooms. General contractor Dan Plummer assesses the basement’s insufficient seismic engineering.
