This Old House (1979)

S21E13 The Billerica House - 13

Dec 18, 1999 Season 21 Episode 13 Documentary, Reality

Episode Overview

Landscape contractor Roger Cook and his team start constructing a stone wall along the driveway, utilizing split stone sourced from North Carolina, which is widely available at home improvement stores. Roger demonstrates his technique for incorporating geotextile and ensuring proper drainage to prevent the wall from being affected by frost heaves over time. Meanwhile, Tom Silva installs the first of the new interior doors, crafted from medium-density fiberboard (MDF) in a classic panel style. These doors maintain the sharp appearance of wood but resist expansion and contraction. For custom designs like these, they are significantly more affordable than wood and arrive in just two weeks. Painters Ron and Greg Byers are busy applying latex paint to the house's exterior with an airless sprayer. Our host also visits the factory where the expanded urethane millwork is produced for both interior and exterior use. Homeowner Dick Silva shares some ideas he’s exploring to conceal the flat-screen TV positioned above the mantle.
