We find Rich in the basement, where the air handling unit for the first floor's heating and cooling system is installed. The primary source of warmth, however, comes from radiant floor heating, enhanced by aluminum mounting plates and joist-bay foil insulation that directs heat back into the floor above. Outside, Roger Cook discusses the different options he considered for edging the landscape walkways, ultimately opting for steel due to its durability, flexibility, and low visibility. In the workshop, Tom Silva is applying fast-drying lacquer to new cabinet doors, while our master carpenter is in the New Yankee Workshop crafting legs for the kitchen island. Donna Sapolin, the editor-in-chief of This Old House magazine, tours the home to highlight the interior design hurdles and later visits a nearby furniture showroom to explore some of the design elements created for the Silvas' new residence.
