This Old House (1979)
S23E08 The Manchester House - 8
Episode Overview
As our new roof installation begins, our master carpenter discusses the roofing system with contractor Mark Mulloy. They cover the decking, a bitumen membrane that waterproofs everything from the eaves to the ridge, and a three-dimensional nylon mesh that promotes airflow under the shingles. The shingles themselves are crafted from pressure-treated southern yellow pine and come with a 50-year transferable warranty. Meanwhile, Tom demonstrates a quick method for cutting studs while constructing a partition wall under a bowed ceiling. Our master carpenter also visits a factory in Bend, Oregon, to see the production of our new windows. Lastly, specialist Mark Schaub evaluates the chimneys and discovers that the relatively new one from the 1970s falls short of standards.
