This Old House (1979)

S27E15 Cambridge | Contemporary Design Elements

Jan 12, 2006 Season 27 Episode 15 Documentary, Reality

Episode Overview

Landscape contractor Roger Cook expertly installs impressive bluestone treads on a stringer that seemingly "floats" above a newly designed water feature. Landscape architect Greg Lombardi guides host Kevin O'Connor through the selection of low-maintenance plants intended for screening and seasonal appeal in the side yard. Inside, master carpenter Norm Abram collaborates with plastering contractor Alberto Riponi to tackle a challenging trim detail—a slender plaster bead that casts a delicate shadow around every window and door. Plumbing and heating contractor Richard Trethewey explains the advantages of using a chiller for cooling homes on compact urban lots. In the front guest room, flooring contractor Pat Hunt showcases a new 5/8" pre-finished red oak engineered floor from Europe, boasting a 30-year warranty over radiant heat and a glue-free locking system. Finally, rug specialist Steve Bookokian demonstrates his process for cleaning, drying, and restoring 26 of George's oriental rugs.
