In the premiere of the third season of 30 Days, Morgan Spurlock heads back to his home state of West Virginia to take on the role of a rookie coalminer, known as a "redhat," for a month. He settles in Bolt, where he lives with Dale and Sandy Lusk. Dale, who has spent 35 years in the mines, helps Morgan immerse himself in the miner's lifestyle. While Morgan discovers the financial incentives that attract many to coal mining, he also witnesses the perilous conditions miners endure daily. Assigned to tough tasks like plastering, constructing wooden supports, shoveling coal, and moving heavy machinery, Morgan also uses his days off to explore broader issues within the coal industry. He meets Peggy Cohen, whose father was a victim of the tragic 2006 Sago mine explosion, and engages in discussions with both coal executives and environmentalists about the controversial practices of surface mining and mountaintop removal, seeking a balanced understanding of an industry that fuels
