At a bustling booksellers' convention, Agatha Deming, the author of a scandalous bestseller, encounters Wilma Klein, an esteemed editor, and Nick Braithwaite, a tough book critic. Unbeknownst to each other, Agatha and Nick accidentally cross paths, hiding their identities. After a night of drinking, they spend the night together, only to clash when Nick dismisses Agatha's book as garbage upon learning her identity.
