After enduring more scorn from Silvester, Garrow is motivated to take on the defense of Edgar Cole, a man charged with the rape of a servant girl. In a surprising turn, Garrow secures an acquittal for the loathsome Cole, leaving Lady Sarah deeply upset. When she confronts Garrow about the verdict, Silvester interrupts, picking up on the tension between them. His insinuations offend Garrow, prompting him to challenge Silvester to a duel to uphold Lady Sarah's honor. In his next case, Garrow faces off against his old rival, the ruthless thief-taker Edward Forrester. Forrester instructs petty criminals Tom and Phebe to steal a box of lace from shopkeeper Katharine Stanton. Garrow reaches out to Southouse for assistance, but he worries that his growing bond with Lady Sarah might jeopardize his relationship with his cherished mentor.
