A Different World (1987)

Episode Overview

Freddie sets up a mentorship initiative for teens held at a juvenile facility, offering them a chance for parole through a week-long project. Dwayne finds himself mentoring two rival gang members who clash constantly due to their backgrounds, one of whom lost a cousin to the other’s gang. Despite Dwayne’s efforts to steer them away from violence and towards their goals, the boys feel hopeless about their futures. Attempts to involve their parents backfire, especially with Billy’s aggressive father, who threatens Dwayne. Nevertheless, Dwayne persists, encouraging the boys to envision brighter paths. Ultimately, they perform a rap advocating for peace, which catches the attention of Billy’s father, who appears moved by the message.
