Meanwhile, Emma finds herself trapped in a tumultuous marriage to Daniel, an unsuccessful author who has succumbed to gambling and violence. Seeking solace, she turns to Charley for comfort. In a bid for freedom, Richard agrees to testify against his accomplice, Michael Sharpe, narrowly escaping an assassination attempt.
