Episode Overview

Teaming up with a progressive warden, Judge Garth secures the release of Matthew Cordell (Robert Redford), a man who has spent most of his life in orphanages and prisons, placing him in his care for a year at Shiloh Ranch as a blacksmith. Having faced mistreatment throughout his life, Cordell initially keeps his distance from the ranch workers. After rescuing Betsy Garth's horse, she begins to develop feelings for him, but his heart lies with Rita Marlow, the owner of the local dress shop. Tensions arise when an old prison acquaintance, Deke (Don O'Kelly), shows up, urging Cordell to join him in a robbery scheme against Judge Garth.
