Ernie's chance of being adopted by the all-male Douglas family is jeopardized by a rule requiring a woman in the household. Steve approaches the adoption agency once more, but Misses Coulter and Miller inform him that they can’t alter the regulations. However, Miss Miller devises a clever solution, leading the family to a judge who rules that Uncle Charley, the housekeeper, can officially be recognized as the 'lady of the house.' Charley agrees to this arrangement on the condition that it's kept under wraps, and Ernie is joyfully embraced by his new family.
