Episode Overview

Andy Lathrop, a simple boy from Tennessee, serves as the lead bombardier for Savage. In a heroic act, he saves Savage’s life, earning a promotion to 1st Lieutenant and a nomination for the Distinguished Flying Cross. While on leave, he meets and falls in love with Mary Lean, a barmaid, and proposes to her, to which she happily agrees. Tragically, their pub is destroyed in an air raid, resulting in Mary’s death. Overcome with sorrow, Andy goes AWOL, but after a heartfelt conversation with Savage, he reflects on his choices and decides to return to duty, now more experienced.
