Episode Overview

The 918 squadron is on its eighth mission to bomb the submarine pens at St. Nazaire, led by Major Kurt Brown, who has never turned back from a mission. His bombardier, Richards, is severely injured, prompting Brown to instruct his Navigator to keep him at the bomb sight. They successfully complete the mission, but Brown is frustrated by the heavy losses, having lost 34 aircraft over eight missions, leading to a heated discussion with Colonel Gallagher. Later, at the Star & Bottle, Gallagher asks Brown to take Liz home. On his next mission, Brown has to abort due to his Navigator's appendicitis. Liz reveals to Brown that she is German, which angers him. As he prepares for his 44th mission, Brown, still reeling from his feelings for Liz, passes out from sheer exhaustion before takeoff.
