Anderson has been enjoying success at poker with his friends when he becomes infatuated with Chris Carlyle, a captivating third-year law student who resides at the Hamilton Society House, notorious for its poker-loving, academically challenged elite. Although Chris is intelligent, her financial struggles lead her to trade room and board for class "notes." Kingsfield disapproves, lamenting that others benefit from her efforts. When Anderson visits Chris, he gets drawn into a poker game and loses $800, signing a countercheck he can't cover. His gambling habit hampers his performance in Kingsfield's class, prompting extra assignments. Although the study group feels let down, they rally to help him complete his work, and Ford lends him money to settle his debts.
