Inspired by his parents' heartfelt love letters, Andy decides to write one to his childhood crush from kindergarten. Meanwhile, Lauren is struggling to balance her time with Alex as she wrestles with her psychology thesis, feeling increasingly down about her lack of progress. She opens up to the Keatons about her thoughts of quitting, but Steven and Elyse urge her to persevere, which frustrates Alex. After canceling yet another date with Alex to focus on her work, Lauren expresses her growing boredom with the project that once excited her. Receiving a tepid response from her professor only intensifies her desire to give up and spend more time with Alex, who eagerly supports her decision to prioritize their relationship.
