The Bill (1984)
S05E25 Loss
Episode Overview
Ch. Insp. Conway calls P.C. Smith and W.P.C. Martella in for a unique task: to sift through the missing persons database and investigate specific cases. Cynical Sgt. Penny remarks that the initiative is driven by political motives. One distraught mother, who has been pestering her local MP about her missing daughter, seems more interested in securing a three-bedroom house than her child's well-being. Tragically, the girl is later found deceased. In another case, the wife of a missing man, who had been reaching out to the Chief Constable, takes her own life after spotting his ad in a lonely hearts publication. Smith is eager about his new responsibilities and dreams of establishing a dedicated missing persons unit at Sun Hill, but once the politically sensitive cases are resolved, their unit is abruptly disbanded.
