Fan Xian carefully examines the location where the exam papers are evaluated. Those officials attempting to interfere with the results are forced to abandon their plans. As the announcement of the results approaches, Fan Xian looks over the rankings and notices that the name of a candidate expected to pass has been altered. When confronted, the crown prince denies any involvement in modifying the list.
