Okita expertly managed to counter the blows that had allowed Date to bring Ippo down twice. In a state of panic, Ippo tried to create some distance, but Okita’s feints kept him on edge, making it hard for Ippo to anticipate his next moves. As Ippo attempted to close the gap, Okita's jabs effectively kept him at a distance. Drawing on his experience, Okita landed all his punches, eventually cornering Ippo just as he had planned. This set the stage for his signature Corkscrew punch, a move that had once instilled fear in Makunouchi.
