World's Greatest Palaces (2019)
S01E02 Schönbrunn Palace
Episode Overview
For 350 years, Schönbrunn Palace served as the primary summer residence for Austria's Habsburg imperial family. This stunning rococo masterpiece, featuring 1,441 rooms, has welcomed many of Europe’s most notable personalities, such as Marie Antoinette, Mozart, and Napoleon Bonaparte. The palace was also the home of two remarkable Habsburg matriarchs: Empress Maria Theresa and Empress Elisabeth. Maria Theresa ruled for four decades in the 18th century, strategically marrying her daughters into powerful European royal families. Empress Elisabeth, affectionately known as Sisi, captivated the Austrian Empire with her beauty and charm, drawing comparisons to Princess Diana before her tragic assassination in Geneva in 1898.
