World's Greatest Palaces (2019)
S01E03 The Royal Palace of Caserta
Episode Overview
The Royal Palace of Caserta, recognized as the largest palace globally, is situated 30 kilometers north of Naples. This immense structure boasts 1,200 rooms across five floors, covering an area of 762,000 square meters. A masterpiece of architectural beauty and remarkable engineering, Caserta served as the center of the Bourbon Kingdom of Naples. Designed by architect Luigi Vanvitelli for King Charles VII in 1752, the palace features the Caroline Aqueduct, which transports water from the Taburno Mountains, over 40 kilometers away, at an astonishingly precise gradient of just half a millimeter per meter. Additionally, the palace grounds host an operational silk factory that dates back to the 18th century.
